What is Spiderwood?
Spiderwood is a type of wood with many fine branches and comes from China. This is the root of the rhododendron, this Asian root is harvested, dried and stripped of the bark.
Because spiderwood is dried it takes a little longer for it to sink to the bottom of your aquarium, to speed up this process you can place a stone on it or attach a plexiglass plate and slide it into the bottom.
This type of wood contains a lot of cellulose, making it a suitable food source for catfish.
Other names for spiderwood:
- Red Moor Root,
- Redmoor Wood,
- Finger Wood,
- Azalea wood,
- Asian root wood.
Spiderwood is an ideal decoration for your aquarium, its unique shape and structure give it a natural look.

White mold?
If Spiderwood is placed in the aquarium, mold may occur.
This is caused by bacteria that were in the wood, these bacteria start a decomposition process when they come into contact with oxygen. The residual product is an oily substance that looks like a white slime layer.
This process takes a few weeks and the white layer will disappear by itself.
