Propagating plants
Want to get started growing, cutting or propagating your aquarium plants yourself?
Here you will find a page with basic information on how to get started with this.
First we will talk about the different types of plants, which can be divided into 3 plant groups:
- Stem plants
- Rosette plants
- Rhizome plants
We start with the Stem Plants:
The Stem Plant is one of the most common plants in your aquarium.
It can be recognized simply by its stems.
The plant grows and leaves a thickening at each leaf so that we can use it for cuttings.
The idea is that you cut the stem plant 5cm from the bottom.
Step-by-step plan:
- Step 1: Cut the plant as straight as possible above a thickening
- Step 2: Replant the cut piece in the soil (preferably in the nutrient medium)
- Step 3: After some time, new roots will emerge from the shoot and the plant will start growing again
Some examples of well-known stem plant families:
- Alternathera
- Vallisneria
- Elodea densa
- Ceratophyllum Demersum
- Hygrophila
Then we come to the Rosette Plants:

The Rosette Plant is a plant that reproduces by means of runners, which are small nodes in the plant itself.
This makes them relatively easy plants to propagate or grow from cuttings.
Please note that the offshoot must already have 3 or more leaves so that it can obtain nutrition from the light source.
Step-by-step plan:
- Step 1: Cut or tear the young plant with 3 or more leaves.
- Step 2: Replant the small plant preferably in a good nutrient medium.
- Step 3: Over time, the plant will begin to root well.
Some examples of Rosette Plant families:
- Echinodorus
- Cryptocoryne
- Cyperus
-
Sagittaria
Finally we will discuss the Rhizome plants:
Rhizome plants can be recognized by the fact that they create new plants by means of a root network.
To propagate these plants you can divide the root but make sure that at least 3 or more leaves remain on each root.
Then you can tie or glue the cut pieces to a piece of wood and a new plant will grow from these roots.
Step-by-step plan:
- Step 1: Divide the roots, but make sure that there are still more than 3 leaves on each piece.
- Step 2: Then tie the divided root pieces to a piece of wood.
- Step 3: After some time, new plants will emerge.
Examples of Rhizome plant families:
- Anubias
- Bucephalandra
- Microsorum
- Bolbitis
