Bears differ from other carnivores in that the specialized teeth they possess are not specifically adapted to tearing meat, but instead to grind up vegetation. However, in order for such a large animal to survive successfully on a mostly vegetarian diet, the Black Bear must spend an enormous amount of time eating, and has been known to consume tens of thousands of nuts and berries per day. Since they spend about half their day foraging and eating, the average black bear will eat a nut or berry every second.
