Aponogeton Henkelianus
Aponogeton Henkelianus
The Aponogeton Henkelianus is a large bulbous plant, native to the fast-flowing waters of Madagascar.
This plant is very similar to the Aponogeton Madagascariensis, but the leaves of the Aponogeton Henkelianus are somewhat narrower.
The Aponogeton Henkelianus has a beautiful and sensitive green leaf with a mesh structure. This leaf requires some extra attention. This way you keep the leaf the most beautiful when no food/dirt remains on it and it is important that the water values in your aquarium remain stable, pay extra attention to the iron value (Fe). When the water values fluctuate too much, the plant can rot or melt away.
The bulb of the plant should be placed (carefully) for a maximum of 1/3 in the ground, so that the part from which the plant grows protrudes above the ground. This is to prevent the bulb from rotting.
A good nutrient base is not necessary for this plant. Too many nutrients in the soil even works counterproductive for the Aponogeton Henkelianus, this can lead to brown spots on the leaf.
When planting, consider the size of the Aponogeton Henkelianus. Provide a place where there is enough space for the plant to grow solitary.
The Aponogeton Henkelianus is a fast grower and does well when allowed to grow its roots through the root bed of smaller aquarium plants (already present in the aquarium), such as a Cryptocoryne.
When the plant starts to flower, it will grow a stem from the bulb towards the water surface. A white or yellow flower will form there. When it has finished flowering, the seeds will be released. You can remove these seeds from the aquarium to grow a new plant.
The plant species 'Aponogeton' is a plant that has a rest period every now and then. Growth will come to a standstill and the plant can lose its leaves. It is good for the plant to dim the light during this period. There are people who temporarily place the plant in another aquarium, without lighting, but because the plant does not like to be moved, you can also choose to add (extra) floating plants to the aquarium to create more shade. When the plant has 'rested', growth will continue again.
