General:
The Bucephalandra is found exclusively in the Indian Archipelago. This is an archipelago between the Malacca Peninsula (South-East Asia) and Australia, most Bucephalandras grow in tropical Borneo. This marsh plant is of course familiar with the rainy season and associated water level rise and grows partly above and partly under water, in fast-flowing rivers, streams and banks, firmly rooted to stones, rocks and wood.
This flowering plant is sensitive to sudden changes in water values, it can happen that the Bucephalandra melts away and loses its leaves. If the plant is otherwise healthy, this often just grows back.
In appearance and leaf, the Bucephalandra resembles, according to many, the Cryptocoryne. However, this plant is more like the Anubias. This is because the Bucephalandra is also a slow-growing rhizome plant, which means that the rootstock grows above the (nutrient) soil. The roots of the Bucephalandra attach themselves fairly quickly to wood and stone.
The Bucephalandra requires good lighting and (liquid) fertilizer to develop well. CO2 can promote color intensity and growth, but is not a requirement.
