Preparing the pond in/for autumn

In this blog we will tell you more about the GH value of the pond, the maintenance that is required annually and what you can do yourself around the autumn period.

Maintaining water values
Even in October it is important to keep an eye on the GH value of the pond.
This is very important for the water, because it is kept as stable as possible in the autumn and winter, so you can enjoy it even more in the spring.

On average, a small dose of GH could be added weekly.
For example: a pond with a capacity of 4000 litres of water needs 10 ml of GH plus to remain in balance.
This prevents the pond from suddenly turning green when spring comes, or the plants in it from actually growing more.

Tip : Use the Moerings pond test set to determine the correct values for your pond.

Frost
Also keep in mind that when a frost period is approaching, the filter must continue to run at all times.
It is best to remove all filter medium from the filter and put the filter materials back into the filter as soon as spring arrives.

Falling leaves
Have you not yet purchased a cover net for the pond?
Then it is advisable to purchase it anyway.

Leaves fall from the trees and end up in the pond.
Besides the fact that it often does not look nice, a rotting process also starts in the water, which is not convenient.

It is best to remove the leaves from the pond, but using a cover net will reduce the amount of falling leaves and allow you to easily remove the leaves.

Maintenance in/before autumn
Now is also the time to carry out major maintenance.
If you do not do this in the autumn, it must be done in the spring.

The important thing here is that the sludge layer is removed in part or in its entirety.
By adding Bio Boost , sludge is already partially broken down; the dosage is adjusted depending on how thick the slip layer is.

In the 'old fashioned' way it meant that the entire pond was emptied including the fish. Then all the sludge was scooped up and thrown into a wheelbarrow and spread elsewhere (it is a fantastic fertilizer for the flowers and grass).
Next came the pond vacuum cleaner, this sucks the sludge from the bottom, often with a lot of water. There is a hose attached to this, but never long enough to carry the sludge far away.
This also requires quite a bit of force.
This method is however recommended for ponds where no maintenance has been done for the sludge for a while. The layer is then so thick that even the Bio Boost cannot do it alone.

By simply adding Bio Booster in the correct dosage to the pond water, the sludge layer is dissolved naturally and the microbalance in the pond is restored to perfect condition.

So there are plenty of benefits to using Bio Boost.
